Chasing the Mystical Blue Fire at Mount Ijen

Mount Ijen is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia, famous for its turquoise-colored acidic crater lake and the "blue fire" phenomenon, where burning sulfur gases create electric-blue flames at night. The mountain is also the site of a physically demanding traditional sulfur mining operation, where miners carry heavy loads of sulfur from the crater to earn a livelihood.

The blue fire is a natural phenomenon caused by the combustion of sulfur gases emitted from volcanic vents. It is most spectacular at night, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., and is one of the few places in the world where it can be observed.

Is Ijen Crater Safe for Children & the Elderly?

The Ijen hike begins at Paltuding Post at an altitude of 1,850 meters above sea level and ascends to the summit at 2,386 meters above sea level.

  • Distance: Approximately 3–3.5 KM one way (Total 6–7 KM round trip).
  • Trail Terrain: The first 2 KM is quite steep (with a gradient of 25–35 degrees), followed by 1 KM of flat path along the crater edge
  • Temperature: In the morning, it can range from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius
  • Sulfur Fumes: This is the greatest risk. The solfatara fumes released from the crater contain toxic gases that can cause chest pain and irritate the eyes

Children under 10 years old are strictly forbidden from descending to the Blue Fire area (crater floor) due to the very high concentration of sulfur gas below, which is dangerous for children's lungs.

Risks for the Children:

  • Hypothermia: Children lose body heat faster than adults. Strong winds at the summit are particularly risky for them.
  • Fatigue: Steep trails often make children fussy during the hike.
  • Respiratory Irritation: Sulfur gas is highly harmful to children's respiratory systems.

For elderly travelers (above 60 years), the main challenges are stamina and health history.

If the elderly have a history of the following diseases : Heart disease, Asthma or chronic respiratory disorders & Hypertension ( High Blood Pressure ) --> It is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN to climb
